Practical trucking insights. This article is general educational information; review the requirements of your operation and the terms of your particular contracts.
Know Your Numbers
Driving a truck and running a trucking business are two very different skill sets. You cannot run a profitable business if you don’t know your cost per mile. Track every expense, from fuel and insurance to maintenance and meals.
Build Relationships
The spot market is volatile. Building strong relationships with direct shippers and reliable brokers provides stability. Deliver on time, communicate clearly, and you will become a preferred carrier.
Plan for the Down Cycles
Trucking is cyclical. When rates are high, save your money. Create an emergency fund that can cover at least three months of operating expenses. When the market inevitably drops, you’ll be one of the fleets that survives.
